There are several methods to create: We have been producing virtual tours for over 10 years. Originally using a Behere single shot mirrored lens lens to capture a 360 degree horizontal view with a 100 degree vertical view on 35mm film. With the progression of digital cameras we shortly went digital again with a single shot lens (Behere Total View). Both these lenses produce a circular donut like image

this is then converted by software to a flattened .jpeg image see below

the resulting flattened panoramic image is the viewed via a java applet, flas movie or quicktime presentation

The resulting image is then viewed most commonly by a java applet (PT Viewer).

These lenses are very good for what they do and are quick and relatively cheap. For a fuller high quality (sky & ground) it is necessary to use a 180 degree fisheye lens that captures a spherical image. This can be done by taking a number of shots and then stitching them together resulting in a greater range of view and higher quality. We use a Nikon D70 vertically mounted with a 8mm Sigma lens, which gives 180 degree view

Using a special tripod head we then take another 3 images that will cover 360°. Once downloaded the resulting photographs are then fed through a panoramic stitching software to produce a warped looking single image.

here are the 4 blended and stictched images together as a single .jpeg. high quality virtual tour photography
